Farm to Cup: Coffee in Walhalla

Alexander’s Coffee House & Cafe: A Taste of Puerto Rico in the Heart of Walhalla

If you’re exploring downtown Walhalla and craving a place to relax, refuel, or even get some work done, Alexander’s Coffee House & Cafe offers all of that—and more. This locally owned business opened in 2022 and blends the welcoming spirit of Oconee County with authentic Puerto Rican coffee and flavors.

Coffee with a Story

At Alexander’s, every cup of coffee tells a story. Their beans come directly from a family-owned farm in Utuado, Puerto Rico, founded in 1980 by Dionisio Custodio and Esther Jiminez. Today, the farm’s 100,000 coffee trees are lovingly tended by their grandchildren, who continue the tradition with a focus on sustainability.

Co-owner Anny Torres forged a connection with these growers, making Alexander’s the only coffee shop stateside to sell this particular Puerto Rican coffee. The cafe imports about 125 pounds each month, offering medium and dark roasts as well as espresso in both ground and whole bean form. Bags are available in 8 oz. and 2 ½ lb. sizes, so you can take the rich flavors home with you.

Drinks & Treats for Every Taste

Beyond the signature coffee, Alexander’s serves up a playful beverage menu. Guests can sip on fun drinks named after local attractions, candy-inspired lattes, boba teas, fruity refreshers, or classic favorites like smoothies and milk teas.

Foodies will find plenty to enjoy as well. Daily offerings include: sweet & savory pastries and breakfast & lunch sandwiches. They have an in-house baker who makes Puerto Rican specialties such as Boricua Bowls, Empanadas & Rellenos De Papas and regional desserts.

Alexander’s also partners with local businesses including Open Door Bakery & Deli, The Donut Wagon, and Cardamom Bake Shop to feature a rotating selection of  delicious pastries. Blue Bell ice cream rounds out the menu for anyone craving something sweet.

More Than a Coffee Shop

Alexander’s hosts after-hour events, private meetings, and the Oconee Chamber of Commerce every quarter.

Live music adds another layer of charm: every Friday morning from 8:30–10:30 a.m., you can catch the Walhalla Wanderers playing bluegrass while you sip your morning brew.

For shoppers, Alexander’s has a retail selection of local artisan goods—from handmade soaps and pottery to blown glass, jewelry, candles, and stationary. They even have a small bookshop where you can discover local authors and attend “meet the author” events.

Catering & Community Connections

Planning a gathering? Alexander’s offers catering options such as Puerto Rican pastries, coffee boxes, build-your-own sandwiches, and box lunches. They also provide breakfast platters for meetings or celebrations.

With bilingual employees, senior discounts, birthday rewards, and a punch card program, Alexander’s goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome.

The Owners

Alexander’s is owned by Levi and Carrie Shook—Levi a Walhalla native—along with Alex Correa and Anibeliz “Anny” Torres. Anny’s Puerto Rican heritage and connections bring authenticity to the café’s coffee and pastries. Together, these couples have created more than just a coffee shop; they’ve built a gathering place where cultures meet, ideas spark, and community thrives.
