Lake Hartwell comprises nearly 56,000 acres of water with a shoreline of 962 miles–262 miles border Oconee County, SC.

Lake Hartwell is a man-made reservoir bordering Georgia and South Carolina.  The lake is fed by the Savannah, Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers.  It was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963.

Lake Hartwell is one of the top three most-visited Corps lakes in the nation, with an estimated 14 million people visiting annually! Over 20,000 acres of public land surround the lake. The northern arm of the lake borders Clemson University. Popular activities to enjoy on Lake Hartwell include: fishing, camping, boating, swimming and water sports.

The Corps of Engineers operates nine campgrounds, 15 major day-use area and numerous lake-access points.  Lake Hartwell State Recreation Area is sought after for camping and boating, as are Coneross and Oconee Point Campgrounds, which are located on the Seneca River at the northern end of the lake.

Chauga River

A 31 mile long tributary of the Tugaloo River that flows south to Lake Hartwell. The Chauga River offers much of the same scenic beauty and cool waters found nearby on the Chattooga River. Anglers like the Chauga River and often catch rainbow trout, brown trout, chubs, and redeye bass. Depending on the water level, sections of the Chauga are popular for whitewater kayaking. Good access and parking are available off Cassidy Bridge Road in Mountain Rest.
