Tamassee Town historical marker

Tamassee was one of several Cherokee “Lower Towns” in the region. It was abandoned in 1752 due to threats by their Creek enemies. By 1770, Cherokee had returned to the town. In 1776 they sided with the British during the Revolution and attacked settlements along the frontier. In retaliation, South Carolina Patriots destroyed Tamassee and other Cherokee towns during the war.
