Fall is one of the best times to get outside in Oconee County. The temperatures cool down,
the leaves begin to change, and the trails take on a whole new look for fall! But not everyone
is looking for the same kind of hike. Maybe you want the best fall color. Maybe you’re chasing
waterfalls. Maybe you want something easy enough for the whole family, or maybe you’re
ready for a little bit of a challenge. Whatever your hiking style is, there’s a fall adventure
waiting for you in Oconee County.

During fall, High Falls Nature Trail never fails to impress with its vibrant color! This half mile loop winds through a hickory oak forest with native plants and chances to spot local wildlife along the way. The changing leaves make the whole trail feel even more special. Around the trail, there are interpretive signs that share more about the area’s natural history, making the trail especially fun for younger hikers!

“I want a waterfall.”

If you’re looking for an easy hike with a waterfall at the end, Station Cove Falls is a great pick! The trail is only half a mile and stays fairly flat the whole way. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the falls. Once you get there, you’ll see a 60 foot stepped waterfall tucked into the forest. You can also stop by Oconee Station State Historic Site nearby. It’s a fun way to add a little history to your fall adventures!

“I want a challenge.”

If you want a hike that feels a little more adventurous, Yellow Branch Falls is the perfect choice! The trail is 1.5 miles each way and rated moderate, giving you about a 3 mile round trip through the woods. Once you reach the falls, you’ll get an up close look at the impressive 50 foot cascade. With a little more distance and a beautiful waterfall at the end, Yellow Branch Falls is a rewarding way to spend a fall day outside.

“I’m hiking with the family.”

Brasstown Falls is a great option for a family hike. The trail is only about 0.3 miles and takes around 20 minutes. At the end, you’ll find a series of waterfalls that drop about 120 feet in total. There is also a calm swimming hole at the lower falls. With a short trail and plenty to see, Brasstown Falls makes for a fun fall outing with the family.

Oscar Wigington Overlook is an easy stop with a view worth pulling over for! From the overlook, you can see the mountains and Lake Jocassee in the distance. In the fall, the changing leaves make the view even more beautiful. Bring your camera or just use your phone. Either way, you’ll probably want more than one picture here.

If you just want to get out in the woods for a while, King Creek Falls is a great choice. The trail takes about 30 minutes and leads through a peaceful wooded area. At the end you’ll find a 70 foot waterfall tucked into a stunning gorge. The cooler weather and changing leaves make it a great place to slow down and enjoy being outside!
