Active Outdoor Adventures

Discover the tranquility of our lakes, rivers & waterfalls

Winter is a serene and soothing time to enjoy the area Native Americans knew as the “land beside the water.” With the crowds of summer gone, you can relish the peaceful stillness of Lake Keowee, Lake Hartwell, and Lake Jocassee along with the Chattooga and Chauga Rivers and dozens of waterfalls.

Bundle up and explore the scenic beauty by foot, by boat, kayak or canoe, as the clear winter air enhances the surrounding views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Chilly weather doesn’t deter fans of the Chattooga River. The winter months are pleasant for hiking, fishing and even kayaking/canoeing on the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River. Fishing enthusiasts can take advantage of less competition on the water, with species like bass and trout remaining active.

There are many waterfalls to find in Oconee County and we love sending people to Brasstown Falls, where four stunning cascades await. It’s a relatively short, accessible trail ideal for all types of hikers (though there are numerous stairs along the way that might not work for every mobility level). See our Waterfalls page to find dozens of forested trails that are accessible to the public in Oconee County.

Whether you’re seeking tranquility or outdoor recreation, our lakes, rivers and waterfalls offer invigorating opportunities during the winter months.
